The Spa at Beechworth is located in the picturesque town of Beechworth in North East Victoria. Known for being one of the best preserved gold towns in Victoria the township offers boutique shopping, accommodation, wineries and fine dining experiences, hiking and bike trails for all levels of fitness wind their way through the region.
The Spa at Beechworth is situated on the historic site of the former Mayday Hills Hospital. Building began on our site in 1864 and was completed 1867.
The spa operates in the Birches building which formerly housed the administrators for the hospital. The Birches building is a symmetrical structure of three storeys dominated by a pair of Italianate towers and highlighted with paired and tripled windows. Constructed of rendered brickwork, listed by the National Trust and lovingly refurbished by spa owner Deb Donkers prior to opening in 2006.
Mayday hills operated as a psychiatric hospital from 1864 to 1995.
The heritage gardens surrounding us are a lavish 27 acres allowing our treatment rooms to offer an abundance of natural light and views into the tree tops. An arbour of English oaks grace the drive as you wind your way through the gates. The extensive number of imported and exotic trees are noted as having been acquired from plantings at the Royal Botanical gardens in Melbourne.
Self or guided walks of the property are available and feature points of interest such as the Ha-Ha wall, gate house, chapel and the two cement vases that today stand at the entrance to the Birches building that were sent by rail in 1891 from Melbourne to Beechworth.
